How to work it out
Adding
Jump through the second number in easy chunks: hundreds first, then tens, then units.
47 + 38 → 47 + 30 = 77, 77 + 8 = 85
Taking away
Same idea backwards: take away the tens, then the units.
82 − 47 → 82 − 40 = 42, 42 − 7 = 35
Times
Build hard ones from easy ones. ×10 is easy (stick a zero on). ×5 is half of ×10. ×9 is ×10 take away one lot.
7 × 8 → 7 × 5 = 35, 7 × 3 = 21, 35 + 21 = 56
Dividing
It's times tables backwards: "56 ÷ 8" is asking "how many 8s make 56?"
For money, split it into easy chunks first.
£84 split 4 ways → £80 ÷ 4 = £20, £4 ÷ 4 = £1 → £21
Percentages
Percent means "out of 100". You can build ALL of these from just two moves: halving and dividing by 10.
- 50% = half
- 25% = half, then half again
- 10% = divide by 10
- 5% = 10%, then half it
- 20% = 10%, then double it
- 75% = half + a quarter
"20% off" means: work out 20%, then take it away from the price.
20% off £65 → 10% = £6.50, 20% = £13, £65 − £13 = £52
